COMPOUNDING LABORATORY

Every person is different – that’s why each compounded prescription can be specifically tailored for your individual needs. Working with the physician, our pharmacist can prepare a “customized” medication in a special compounding laboratory, using the latest techniques and devices available. Our pharmacist compounds the medication, following the physician’s request, into a special dosage form or delivery system suited for the patient. For example, our pharmacist can prepare a medication using several unique delivery systems, such as, for those patients who are having a difficult time swallowing a capsule, an oral suspension or a suppository instead, or prepare a transdermal gel, cream or ointment for dermatological use.

There are several reasons why pharmacists compound prescription medications:

  • You can obtain a medicine that is dye-free and preservative-free – common allergy triggers. For adults or children who are allergic to certain substances such as binders or fillers, a compounded prescription would be beneficial.
  • Standard medication doses may not be appropriate for you. With the physician’s approval, the pharmacist can adjust the strength of a medication, modify its form to make it easier for the patient to ingest, or add flavour to make it more pleasant.
  • Many medications can be compounded. Compounded prescriptions are ideal for patients requiring distinctive dosages and/or delivery devices. Children and the elderly are the types of patients that benefit the most from compounding
